The lid, which seals hermetically to the base, contains a microfilter that keeps out contamination while allowing gas exchange. This results in fast and healthy mycelium growth. The jar and lid are made of polypropylene so they can be sterilized in a pressure cooker.  Always leave the lid 1/4 open when sterilizing.
The filters guarantee a much more even and efficient gas exchange. The filters are composed of randomly arranged
fibers
in which microorganisms get trapped, much like the HEPA-filter system. This allows a fluent gas exchange without a drying-out zone below the filters, while still forming a firm barrier against microorganisms.
